As of April 1, 2023, Nepal has banned solo trekking for foreigners. To enter the Khumbu Rural Municipality and Sagarmatha National Park, all trekkers must obtain permits. The Everest Base Camp lies within the Sagarmatha National Park and can only be accessed with both the aforementioned permits. The Sagarmatha National Park permit costs USD 24 (HKD 187) for foreigners and USD 12 (HKD 94) for SAARC nationals, available at Monjo Checkpoint, trekking agencies in Kathmandu, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu, and Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu.

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, costing USD 16 (HKD 125), is issued by the local government and is mandatory for all trekkers visiting the Khumbu region, including Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Tengboche Obtain this permit at Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Office in Lukla and Monjo Checkpoint at Sagarmatha National Park’s entry gate.

Namche Bazaar: Location and how to reach

Located at an altitude of 3,440 metres, Nepal’s Namche Bazaar can be reached by flight, trekking, or even a helicopter ride. There are daily flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, about 27.5 km from Namche Bazaar.

The 35-minute flight, often on a small propeller-driven plane like a Dornier-228 or Twin Otter with just 15 seats, is a cherishable experience. The flight lands at the Tenzing-Hillary Airport (also called the Lukla Airport), touted to be among the most dangerous airports in the world. It has a single runway flanked by high terrain to the North and a steeply angled drop into the valley to the South.

Upon landing, begin your trek from Luka to Phakding, covering a straightforward 8 km. The next morning, embark on the journey from Phakding to Namche, a relatively challenging but fun route. Just short of Namche, you’ll reach Monjo, Sagarmatha National Park’s entry gate. Here, permits will be validated and fees for the park must be paid. Post this step, the soldiers of the Nepalese army will grant you entry into the region. Alternatively, tourists can also take a helicopter from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, based on the weather conditions.

Avid trekkers can also trek from Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar (about 137 km). Reach from Kathmandu to Jiri on an 8-hour bus ride. From there, embark on a 9-day trek, also called the Pioneer’s Route, to reach your destination.

Sigiriya

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is an old city in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka that is bound to surprise and enchant anybody with its ancient and modern character.

Taking a flight to the Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo Airport) situated in Katunayake is one of the best ways to reach the city. The airport is connected to almost all major flights and is an hour’s drive from Colombo.

While the city is also connected with the Katunayake Railway Station and daily scheduled trains run to and fro between the two destinations, you can also reach the city by public buses and taxis available from the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Gangaramaya Temple

Colombo National Museum

Dating back to 1877, the Colombo National Museum should be on your itinerary if learning about the city’s past as well as its natural and cultural heritage interests you. It was founded by the former British Governor of Ceylon, Sir William Henry Gregory, and is the largest museum on the island built in Italian-style architecture with lush green lawns surrounding it.

The museum houses various exhibits, including watercolour paintings, artefacts, antique puppetry, demon masks, swords, jewellery, rocks with inscriptions, coins and lamps. Depicting the country’s history spanning centuries, it also features an ornate throne of the last Sri Lankan King of Kandy and a library that has a collection of centuries-old palm leaf manuscripts written on topics of astrology, architecture and folklore.

Sri Lanka Planetarium

Whether you’re an admirer of the universe and what lies beyond or simply want to be indoors to avoid the hot sun, spending a few hours inside the Sri Lanka Planetarium could be worth it. Constructed in a unique design, the planetarium consists of a large auditorium with 570 seats and a four-dimensional projector, taking you on a journey of the universe. It is located on the University of Colombo campus and was established in 1965. If you’re travelling with your family, a visit to this planetarium would make for a great choice, especially for your kids.

Pettah Floating Market

Previously a swamp with run-down warehouses, the Pettah Floating Market now makes for a beautiful shopping destination in Colombo. This market features around 90 stalls selling authentic and local produce and handicrafts, ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to electronics, art and craft pieces, clothes and jewellery.

Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

Rice and curry — a signature dish in the country that includes rice served with different vegetarian or non-vegetarian curries along with papadams, mallung and pol sambol on the side.

String hoppers — locally known as idiyappam, these rice-flour steamed noodles are served with kiri hodi (coconut milk gravy), pol sambol and meat or potato curry. It makes for a popular breakfast or dinner option.

Kiribath (milk rice) — a staple food cooked on occasion in the form of rice cake, it is often served with lunu miris chilli paste.

There are tangible health benefits to ocean water and sea air – for your skin, thyroid, pain relief… and, perhaps most relevant to the age of covid, your respiratory system and stress. While it may seem like ages since most of us were locked behind closed borders, some, like the residents of Hong Kong, lived under pandemic restrictions until much more recently. For one of our writers, who only made his first international escape a year ago, the priority was life-giving water and wide-open beaches in their varied forms all over the world. His tale of rejuvenation via vitamin sea will likely resonate with us all. Read on for our homage to the healing power of beaches 

SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT DAYS. That was the time between flights during the darkest days of covid-19, the longest I had waited to get on a plane in decades. You could leave Hong Kong (and many did, for good), but faced prohibitive quarantine measures on return.  

Yet, I had to escape, quarantine be damned. Like many others, I yearned for wide open spaces and sought beaches and water – cleansing, calming, healing, rejuvenating, life-giving sea water, the power of the waves, and the perfect antidote to the pandemic.  

First stop, Australia to see family and friends. Hong Kong airport was ghostly quiet, the flight mostly empty and my emotions a mix of anxiety and relief. There may even have been tears. Arriving in Sydney, I was greeted by the scent of freedom and salt in the air on my home turf of Bondi Beach.  

Australia’s most famous beach is a kilometer-long crescent of soft golden sand where posing and people-watching is de rigueur. For the uninitiated, it’s surfers and backpackers at the south end, a multicultural melting pot in the middle, families and LGBTQ+ cliques north, and eye candy all around. The cliff-hugging, six-kilometer-long Bondi to Coogee walk is one of the world’s great coastal trails and shouldn’t be missed.  

Next came Phuket, one of the first places in Asia to reopen to international travelers. It was May 2022, and the island was surprisingly busy, despite the paperwork and testing requirements and the absence of Russian and Chinese tourists.  

I luxuriated at three resorts near the ocean, including the secluded Anantara Layan, and the family-friendly Banyan Tree, where health and spa are practically standard among the benefits, like breakfast. My favorite, Paresa, featured pool villas all with stunning sea and sunset views. (I’m returning to Phuket this month to check into the much talked-about new V Villas in the island’s south.)  

Wanderlust reignited, I sought out faraway lands and unfamiliar cultures, landing in little-visited Mozambique. Its star attraction, the Bazaruto Archipelago, is blessed with pristine waters, plentiful coral and marine life, and a spectacular tidal phenomenon that creates miles of sandbanks that must be seen to be believed.  

Remote as it is, the accommodation is excellent, as is the seafood. Robinson Crusoe would have cried at the comforts at andBeyond Benguerra Island, with its beachfront casinhas serviced by friendly butlers. Even more upscale is the staggering new Kisawa Sanctuary, where each of the 11 ultra-stylish bungalows is set on an acre plot sheltered by undulating dunes. 

Then it was off to the Maldives, which remained open throughout much of the pandemic. The initial shock of seeing the scale of new development, with entire islands being built, ebbed as my seaplane flew over atolls and turquoise ocean. I swam with a whale shark while staying at the W and saw manta rays from my villa deck at the JW Marriott. I can’t wait to return to the Maldives this month to try out Mirihi, with a tantalizing possibility of more whale shark sightings. 

Nearby, my beloved Sri Lanka. The teardrop-shaped isle was on the brink of collapse last year before making a tentative recovery, and I wanted to see how it was faring. I toured the stunning tea country and down to UNESCO-protected Galle, where I stayed at Fort Bazaar and swam with locals at the base of the centuries-old fort. What struck me was the resilience in the face of adversity and the unfailing hospitality of people happy to see the return of tourism.  

Towards the end of my trip, at Kumu Beach, a special encounter. On an otherwise deserted beach, two monks in tangerine robes clamber on giant granite boulders for photos. They change and enter the sea. Instead of fearing the waves, they laugh joyfully, their cares carried away by the tumbling surf. 

Everyone from NIH to PADI has reported on the health benefits of the ocean, for immunity, circulation, mental health and much more. Little wonder we all could probably write our own love letter to beaches.
