Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality show inspired by the popular Netflix Korean drama Squid Game, is now airing on the streamer, and it’s proving just as popular as the original series. Ahead of its final episode, we check out the two filming locations featured in Squid Game: The Challenge.

The TV series, which premiered November 22 and concludes December 6, sees 456 real players take on the deadly challenges seen in the original show, in the hopes of winning a life-changing USD 4.56 million, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

But how did Squid Game: The Challenge‘s producers go about recreating the original dystopian show’s iconic sets?

With nine episodes of the reality show available to watch now, and the finale dropping on December 6, read on for everything you need to know about the Squid Game: The Challenge filming locations.

Where are the Squid Game: The Challenge filming locations?

Squid Game: The Challenge was filmed at Wharf Studios in London over the course of 16 days.

A total of six interconnected sound stages were taken up by production to allow players to live inside a “completely immersive world”.

The only point of the show where filming took place elsewhere was during the Red Light, Green Light game.

Red Light, Green Light was filmed at Cardington Studios in Bedford, Europe’s largest indoor space. At over 100,000 square feet, the space was previously used to build airships and zeppelins in the 1920s and ’30s.

Switzerland is the quintessential European dream. Mirror-like glacial lakes framed by snow-laden peaks, hillsides strewn with wildflowers and juniper, and cities with towering cathedral spires and arched stone bridges built over fast-flowing rivers – all make for unforgettable visuals that one can never tire of. Add to this hundreds of hiking trails, ski slopes and adventure activities, and there’s rarely a dull moment in Switzerland all through the year.

A superb, well-integrated transportation network – switch between trains, boats, cable cars and gondolas with complete ease and efficiency – makes it extremely easy to get around the country. The red, blue and white trains are rightfully a Swiss emblem and one the country is very proud of. With panoramic coaches and cuisine that rivals some of the finest restaurants in the country, Swiss trains could be a destination in themselves. The regular trains are also some of the best out there and given Switzerland’s cinematic good looks all train journeys in the country are spectacular.

With a focus on sustainable travel, Switzerland is one of the first few countries to put sustainability at the centre of everything, which means you can have the perfect holiday without worrying about the impact of your travels on the planet.

Zermatt

If not for the jagged Matterhorn Zermatt would have remained a bucolic farming village, but since the first mountaineers arrived to scale the imposing peak there’s been no looking back. Today, Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s most famous Alpine towns drawing skiers and hikers from afar. The car-free town with its wooden chalets with window sills spilling over with colourful geraniums is the perfect base from which to set out on day-long or multi-day hiking expeditions.

For those who want to enjoy the Matterhorn without the exertion take the cog railway up to the 3089 m high Gornergrat. Step off the railway and come face-to-face with the Matterhorn. It’s a sighting that’s likely to stay with you for life.

French-speaking Lausanne is a hilly city, where you’ll find yourself stopping every now and then to admire the view of Lake Geneva and the vine-covered slopes of the hills around. A university town, Lausanne has a young and buzzy vibe, with plenty of cafes and bars.

Its medieval town centre boasts of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a Gothic edifice dating back to the 13th century. Later, find a spot in one of the city’s many green pockets or head to a sandy strip of beach in Vidy.

How To Spend 3 Days In Paris — Luxury Hotels, Natural Wine Spots & Offbeat Museumshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/europe/perfect-paris-trip-itinerary-according-to-a-local/2023-12-11T05:00:23+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=44706paris trip

On a recent layover in Paris, I spent 15 minutes weeping outside a boulangerie, hands clutching my croissant like a stress ball as I spiralled into decision-paralysis mode. How do I make the most of 24 hours here? I asked myself, my mind racing over how to fit a week’s worth of Paris explorations into one day trip. The answer ended up being: Stop stressing. Walk around. Eat the crushed croissant, and drink a glass of wine with lunch.

Paris provides endless temptations: art and architecture, Michelin-star restaurants, unrivalled vintage shopping, and four-euro wine. There’s no way to do it all, so allowing yourself some grace to wander aimlessly — the French call it flânerie — is key to making the most of your trip. To that end, I suggest basing yourself around the incredibly walkable Marais, which marries classic Parisian architecture with hip restaurants and shops. I’d spring for the new cool-kid hideaway, Le Grand Mazarin, a maximalist hotel that boasts an indoor pool and hammam to revive you after a long day.

Plan your three-day trip to Paris according to a longtime Francophile’s suggestions

Here, I’ve curated a jam-packed three-day itinerary for a quick trip to Paris, in a bid to prevent myself and everyone else from ever ruining a perfectly good croissant out of choice anxiety again. Pick what works for you, skip what doesn’t (but not Musée Bourdelle). Keep in mind that many of the city’s attractions and restaurants close on Sunday and or Monday, so be sure to check their hours in advance. Whatever you do, I hope you people-watch at a cafe somewhere, lingering long enough to convince yourself you might be picking up French by osmosis. I hope you notice how the limestone avenues absorb the light, and maybe a little piece of you, too.

Day 1

After an overnight flight, I always start my day with my favourite French comfort food: a galette complète from Breizh Café, which has several outposts around the city that whip up some of the best buckwheat crepes in Paris. Tucking into their famous complète oignons — layers of ham and Comté cheese topped with a sunny-side-up egg and onions decadently caramelised in cider from Brittany — is the warmest welcome you’ll find in the French capital.

Walk off your breakfast with a stroll through the Marais, making your way toward beloved concept store Merci to satisfy all your souvenir needs, from stationery to expertly curated home goods, clothing, and beyond. If jet lag is setting in, grab a coffee at their Used Book Café, or down the road at the oft-Instagrammed Boot Café.

Mosey over to Place des Vosges, the oldest square in the city. In the warmer months, it’s a lively picnic destination for locals and tourists alike. The manicured trees, stone fountains, and red brick archways surrounding the leafy square are stunning from any angle, but if you’re looking to experience the square’s royal history from a whole new perspective, consider splurging on a room at Cour des Vosges. The refined five-star hotel offers luxuriously intimate accommodations without fuss or ostentation — plus, exclusive views onto the square from the comfort of your bed.

Hidden just beyond the square are the courtyard and gardens of the Hôtel de Sully, a quieter green space offering a wonderful respite from the bustling Rue Saint-Antoine. From there, walk down to the Seine River and cross over to Île Saint-Louis, a jewel-sized island where you can admire the elegant 17th-century architecture and stop by L’Étiquette, a beloved natural wine spot that offers takeaway bottles and wine tastings with the owner, Hervé.

While the Notre Dame Cathedral is still under renovation (it’s set to reopen in December 2024), you can still admire its striking Gothic facade before walking to nearby Shakespeare and Company, the city’s famous English-language bookstore.

Post up at the counter of L’Avant Comptoir de la Terre for a light lunch of Basque-style tapas (don’t skip the seared foie gras) and, oui, more wine. Afterwards, wander around the chic side streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, home to Paris institutions like Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, plus a bevvy of art galleries and upscale shops that are better to visit here than on the over-crowded Champs-Élysées; some favourites for window shopping include Le Bon Marché (the Left Bank’s grand dame department store), the fabulously decorated Hermès flagship, and Officine Universelle Buly, which crafts spectacular candles that make for ultra-chic souvenirs. If you’re up for it, pause to people-watch at the always-bustling Bar du Marché before heading back to your hotel to rest up before dinner.

To finish the day, book a table in the bustling 11th arrondissement at Le Bistrot Paul Bert, which serves elevated comfort food — think steak frites, seafood, and epic desserts — that’s earned a devout fan base.

Day 2

Paris Museum
Image Credit: Sophie Dodd/Travel + Leisure

Today’s the day to pack in your museum visits and sightseeing. Wake up early and grab breakfast at your hotel, or treat yourself to a top-notch coffee and croissant at Café Loustic, which has always made me feel at home.

Walk over to the Louvre, where you should arrive 30 minutes before opening if you’re hoping to snap a selfie with the Mona Lisa. Frankly, if you only have three days, I’d skip it in favour of visiting some of the city’s other world-class museums — but be sure to at least stroll around the iconic I. M. Pei-designed glass pyramid and the historic courtyard. While you could head straight to the Tuileries Garden from here, I love to detour to the Palais-Royal Garden first, an oasis that’s home to a picture-perfect fountain rimmed by those iconic green Sénat chairs.

Pass through the palace’s inner courtyard on your way there, where you can scramble around Daniel Buren’s famous black-and-white Colonnes de Buren installation. Just beyond the garden is Galerie Vivienne, a breathtaking 19th-century covered passage with mosaic floors, antique glass ceilings, and a delightful bookshop. When I think about some of the places that first sparked my love of Paris more than a decade ago, these are what come to mind.

Make your way back to the Tuileries Garden and on to your next museum. Impressionist lovers who are short on time should prioritise the Musée de l’Orangerie to bask in the beauty of Monet’s “Water Lilies,” or plan to linger a little longer across the river at the expansive Musée d’Orsay, which is housed in a former Beaux-Arts train station.

[inline_related_article article_id="31308,25545"]

Sculpture fans should check out the nearby Musée Rodin, or consider the worthwhile trek into Montparnasse to be blown away by the works and former studio of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle at the lesser-known Musée Bourdelle. Whichever museums you choose to visit, be sure to book your ticket in advance to avoid massive lines.

For lunch, book the three-course tasting menu at Substance, a sleek and modern Michelin-starred restaurant in the 16th arrondissement that boasts one of the finest Champagne lists in all of Paris. It’s right around the corner from Place du Trocadéro, an elevated (but typically tourist-swarmed) plaza that offers sweeping views of the Eiffel Tower.

From there, hop on the metro line 6 (or in a taxi, if you prefer) to the Arc de Triomphe. The panoramic view from the top is both fantastic and incredibly crowded; I’d rather enjoy the cityscape later on with a drink in hand at Bonnie, SO/Paris hotel’s trendy terrace restaurant that’s back over in the fourth arrondissement. But first, take your time wandering the iconic Champs-Élysées, making your way toward the storied Place de la Concorde — the famous site of Marie Antoinette’s beheading by guillotine. Chances are, you might need a drink after that; duck into Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, to check out the opulent Bar Les Ambassadeurs. (Pro tip: Be sure to snap a selfie in the marble bathroom.)

Stick around the area for dinner. Try to nab a table at the ultra-trendy Hotel Costes — reservations are hard to come by, but the red-lit atmosphere is glamorous, and the legendary DJ sets continue late into the night.

Day 3

Museum
Image Credit: Sophie Dodd/Travel + Leisure

For a new perspective on the city, take yourself up the steep steps of Montmartre, Paris’ longtime artist haven. You’ll beat the crowds if you arrive early in the morning, and the best place to start is Place Dalida, where you’ll be rewarded with a bucolic view of Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Climbing the cobbled slope of Rue de l’Abreuvoir is a chance to travel back in time, bearing witness to a nostalgic snapshot of what this neighbourhood used to feel like. Whatever the season, this street is utterly charming — bursting with wisteria in summer and framed by red and golden leaves in autumn. Pass by the pink facade of La Maison Rose to snap some classic shots on your way up to Le Clos Montmartre, Paris’ only vineyard. (It’s privately owned, but guided tours are organised a few times per year.)

This part of the city feels like walking through a film set — it’s all steep stone steps framed by vintage street lamps, with a sprinkling of cherry-lit bistros thrown in. To that end, peek around Place du Tertre, a definitively touristy but still-charming square (if you get there ahead of the crowds, that is), which is filled with artists who will ask to paint your portrait. (Note: This area is known for pickpocketing, so keep your belongings secure.) Next, ogle the majesty of Sacré-Coeur, which offers one of the most spectacular views of Paris spread out below.

If it’s still early enough, head over to the Musée de la Vie Romantique (Museum of Romantic Life) for a coffee and pastry at the Rose Bakery tearoom, tucked into their unsurprisingly romantic courtyard and greenhouse. But don’t spoil your appetite — you won’t want to miss the inventive small plates and next-level wine list at Mokonuts, an intimate lunch spot run by a Japanese-Lebanese couple serving up what has consistently ranked among my favourite meals in Paris. The food is fantastic, the 11th arrondissement space is unfussy, and the reservations are hard to come by (call and hope for a cancellation — it happens more often than you’d think). Order the entire menu (it’s small), including at least two desserts. Trust me.

If it’s warm out, go lounge along Canal Saint-Martin or the banks of the Seine, where locals picnic, read, smoke, and smooch — take your pick. On colder days, round off your museum visits with a trip to the Centre Pompidou for modern art or Musée Carnavalet (housed in two fabulous mansions) to delve into the history of Paris.

For dinner, few restaurants charm so instantly as Le Clown Bar — famous for its veal brains and sweetbreads, I choose to go for the delightfully kitschy Belle Époque clown decor. On a recent trip, I skipped the brains and went for the Japanese-inspired beef tartare — a few days have passed that I haven’t thought about it. There’s an abundance of natural wine that will appeal to a range of palates, including those who think natural wine is “too funky.”

If you’re looking for a nightcap (it’s your last night in Paris!), Little Red Door serves up exceptional and inventive cocktails around the corner.

Paris in one day

France
Image Credit: Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If you’ve only got one day in Paris — perhaps you’re on a long layover — you’ll need to remind yourself from the beginning: You can’t do it all. I’ve nearly ruined several brief trips by thinking about all the things I should have packed in, rather than feeling present in the few that I was able to manage.

If it’s your first time, I’d combine the itineraries for days one and two. Base yourself a bit more central to the main attractions — for a night of absolute pampering, treat yourself to a stay at Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, or Le Meurice — two luxury properties just off the Tuileries Garden. Wake up early and indulge in room service or grab a fresh croissant from a boulangerie near your hotel, and savour every second of that interaction — the greasy bag, the warm dough, the flaky mess of it all. Start at the Palais-Royal Garden and Galerie Vivienne before ducking over to see Notre Dame.

Unless you’re a serious art history buff, I’d avoid spending your one day inside a museum, but you should still wander around the Louvre courtyard and Tuileries Garden — Le Cafe Marly is a pricey lunch but offers classic French dishes served with iconic views of the pyramid.

Grab the metro over to Place du Trocadero for some Eiffel Tower time, wander the Champs-Élysées, then stop back at the hotel to freshen up before taking yourself a bit further afield for dinner — go for Bistrot des Tournelles, another excellent spot for homemade pork terrine, steak frites, chocolate mousse, and other French comforts.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Le Meurice – Dorchester Collection via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/le-meurice-paris.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoTUIQbGUtbWV1cmljZS1wYXJpc0gzWANobIgBAZgBCbgBF8gBDNgBA-gBAYgCAagCA7gC0L_AqwbAAgHSAiQ2MDY2N2RhYy01ZDc2LTRmYWItOTk5ZC1mNDc3ZTViM2M4NTfYAgTgAgE&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-five"] [myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Le Meurice – Dorchester Collection via Agoda.com" url="https://www.agoda.com/le-meurice_11/hotel/paris-fr.html?finalPriceView=1&isShowMobileAppPrice=false&cid=1731113&numberOfBedrooms=&familyMode=false&adults=2&children=0&rooms=1&maxRooms=0&checkIn=2023-12-12&isCalendarCallout=false&childAges=&numberOfGuest=0&missingChildAges=false&travellerType=1&showReviewSubmissionEntry=false&currencyCode=INR&isFreeOccSearch=false&isCityHaveAsq=false&pushId=CgYIgMXeqwYSBgiA6OOrBhgBILKJzAYqCioIIgIIASoCCAQ%3D951d3c58-1400-a623-a54e-9a361165bbcc_20231206_13&los=1&searchrequestid=f1b0d074-6bb3-4453-aa09-ad14c8ae5ab9&ds=KhLtyK6bOqQvb7B0" align="center" class="affiliate-six"]

Paris in one week

paris trip
Image Credit: Page Light Studios/Getty Images

La chance! (What luck!) You can take your days a bit easier than the itinerary suggested here, lingering a little longer at cafes perhaps and spreading out more museum visits (you really shouldn’t miss Musée Bourdelle in this case). While you could easily spend the whole week in Paris, you might want to plan an overnight to Versailles, where you should book a royally exceptional stay at the opulent Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, the only hotel on the palace grounds.

If you’re visiting Paris in winter, you’ll want to make time for the festive holiday markets, while in summer, the Seine beckons with its faux beach. Whatever the season, the best thing you can do with your extra time is allow yourself to wander aimlessly, letting the city reveal its magic to you.

In 2022, more than 75,000 Americans moved to Europe. The Netherlands, for example, saw an increase from 15,500 to 24,000 Americans moving in over the last five years, while Spain’s American expat numbers jumped 13 percent, from an estimated 20,000 to nearly 34,000 in the same time frame, according to statistics from the European Union.

Be it for the food and culture, the lower cost of living, or personal opportunity, a move to Europe can offer a lot in terms of life-changing experiences.

“I moved to Spain in 2018, and since then, my life has been filled with exploring new places, meeting new people, learning about local cultures, and uncovering hidden gems,” said Nadia Podrabinek, founder of WhyThisPlace.com. “Barcelona, my home since 2018, is, for me, the best place to live in Europe. This vibrant city strikes a perfect balance between urban hustle and beach town relaxation. The local cuisine, a gastronomic extravaganza, will delight your taste buds with delicacies like tapas, paella, and the world-renowned Catalan cava. Art lovers will be entranced by the city’s architectural marvels, from the whimsical designs of Antoni Gaudí to the contemporary art showcased at MACBA. And let’s not forget the friendly locals — the Catalans — who will welcome you warmly into their community.”

Valencia, the third-largest city in Spain, was crowned the number-one city to live in as part of InterNations’ 2022 Expat City Ranking. And that’s no surprise to Patricia Palacios, cofounder of España Guide. “Located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the beautiful city of Valencia boasts more than 300 sunny days per year with mild winters and warm summers. Moreover, the city is home to two urban beaches with fine golden sand to make the most of its awesome weather,” she said. “The list of Valencia’s charms goes on and on. From its picturesque old town to the lush riverbed park with the neo-futurist City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia is definitely a feast for the eyes.”

This National Park In Spain Is One Of Its Most Peaceful (And Fragile) Destinationshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/europe/donana-national-park-in-spain-is-one-of-its-most-peaceful-destinations/2023-12-10T02:00:04+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=44299Doñana National Park

Andalusia’s Doñana National Park — an almost 270,000-acre expanse of wetlands, juniper-carpeted sand dunes, and forest — is too diverse for a drive-by, too vast to explore on foot. That’s why, on a bright spring morning, I was sitting on a young horse named Morito, who stood knee-deep in a rushing stream.

Breathing in the park’s sweet air, I reached under his mane and gave his neck a scratch as he drank the cool water. When he’d had his fill, I gathered my reins and Morito leapt up the bank, his coat glistening in the sun. One by one, our group of nine — hailing from France, Haiti, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US — let their horses pause for refreshment.

Back on dry ground, a grassland dotted with wildflowers stretched before us, and with our host María Elena Dendaluce in the lead, we broke into a run. When we reached a dappled patch of cork-oak trees, Morito cleared fallen branches with ease, keeping pace with a leaping red deer. Farther along, we spotted a wild boar family, the piglets snuffling for roots and nuts beneath a cluster of umbrella pines.

A guide to exploring this peaceful destination in Spain on a horseback

Soon after, we too stopped in the shade for sustenance. Under the trees, we savoured creamy local goat cheese, thinly sliced jamón ibérico, and a cold sherry from Jerez, the wine region just south of the park. Raising our glasses, we toasted our generous horses and Dendaluce’s guiding partner, Alfonso Gonzalo, who’d trained them.

It was the midpoint of our six-day immersion led by Equiberia Riding Holidays in the Andalusian countryside. I’d spent time in the region’s cities and towns before, but I’d longed to explore its wide-open spaces. Now, we were following a piece of the history-rich trail that is used during the annual Romería de El Rocío pilgrimage.

This religious rite has a traditional tie to horseback riders: starting in the 1600s, generations of riders and families in caravans would follow the route to the town of El Rocío to pay homage to the Lady of Rocío, a statue of the Virgin Mary. (El Rocío is known among equestrians as the “International Village of the Horse.”) Today, modern vehicles make the journey easier, but Dendaluce explained that, while cars or trucks could carry us farther and faster, they pose a threat to the park’s delicate habitat.

Our trip had begun in Utrera, a town just south of Seville, where a local farm with a clutch of elegant guesthouses served as our lodging for the first two nights. Its expanse of olive and orange groves — lush after a much-needed half-day of rain — provided a backdrop for the introductory rides that bonded us with our Spanish mounts.

Doñana National Park

Together, we’d travel through Doñana National Park, ending at a sweep of the Atlantic coast called the Costa de la Luz. Every year, hundreds of thousands of ecotourists travel to the park, drawn by its fragile beauty. The region brims with wildlife, much of it rare. The Iberian lynx, for instance, was recently brought back from the edge of extinction thanks to a successful breeding program and measures taken to protect its territory. Herds of marismeña, one of Spain’s oldest breeds of wild horses, roam freely here. Some 6 million birds stop at its marshy ponds as they migrate from Europe to Africa and back.

On the sandy path, Morito’s fluid walk was silent, and our group fell into an awed hush. I turned my eyes to the sky and trees, hoping to glimpse a bee-eater, black kite, or imperial eagle. Even when I didn’t see them, I felt graced to be in their fleeting company.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Shop the best travel experiences here " url="https://experiences.travelandleisureasia.com/" align="center" class="affiliate-one"]

As with many sensitive habitats around the world, Doñana is imperilled. The demand for water throughout southern Spain so far outstrips supply that wildlife populations are already at risk, according to a World Resources Institute report published last year. In fact, scientists predict that Doñana could become a desert in the next 75 years if current extreme weather patterns persist. During my visit, conversations with fellow riders often turned to concerns about droughts and wildfires that threatened the delicate terrain.

The response is a balancing act: overall park usage is closely monitored, along with trail conditions, and hotels are adopting more land-conscious practices wherever they can. In the town of Villamanrique de la Condesa, our group stayed at the eco-minded Ardea Purpúrea Lodge, which offers Doñana bird-watchers views of the forest and cabins roofed with bayonet grass collected from nearby marshes.

The next morning, we wove our way through fragrant maquis scrub — thick with rockroses, sage, and thyme — pausing at a fountain-fed watering trough overseen by a weather-worn sculpture of La Virgen. In a cool pine forest, our horses pricked their ears and flicked their tails, filtered light strobing the path before us. When the trail opened again to vast grassland, I could sense Morito wanted to run.

Horses

As we reached the coast, he burst out from the dry plains and onto the wild, wide-open beach. We galloped our last miles along the Atlantic’s cool break, the horizon glistening in refracted light. Our horses’ hoofprints — the only trace of our having been there at all — were washed away by the waves behind us.

Our group savoured our every step together, feeling, perhaps, a shared understanding of what research now demonstrates: travelling on horseback leaves people more peaceful, empathic, and social. The day before, we had stopped in El Rocío at a bar in the village centre with horse-height tables. In the air above us, swallows dipped across the sky. Dendaluce, sitting on Sevillano, her dapple grey, lifted a final glass of sherry, honey-gold in the sun. A toast to Doñana, she said: “Salud. AmorCaballos.”

This Paris Neighbourhood Has Secret Gardens & Some Of The Best Views Of The Cityhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/europe/montmartre-in-paris-has-the-best-panoramic-views-of-the-city/2023-12-04T06:00:40+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=43802montmartre

In a city with no shortage of achingly beautiful views, there’s perhaps nowhere as transportive as the cobbled hill of Rue de l’Abreuvoir. Looking past the bus stop and twirling influencers, you can convince yourself you’ve stumbled into Paris’ past — a wisteria-laden marvel that slopes up toward Sacré-Cœur.

Once an independent commune, Montmartre was absorbed into Paris’ city limits in 1860, but the hilltop village has always retained a distinct sense of self. Famed for its religious, artistic, and at times seedy history, the neighbourhood’s iconic lampposts, steep steps, and panoramic views have drawn the likes of Picasso, Renoir, and hopelessly devoted Francophiles like myself with its bucolic charm.

I’ve spent more than a decade wandering the main tourist thoroughfares and beyond, finding secret gardens, romantic museums, retro photo booths, and hedonistic hotels along the way. Here, is a curated guide to the artistic haven of Montmartre, Paris’ timeless village.

Your guide to the picturesque village of Montmartre

Best things to do

Tour Sacré-Cœur Basilica

Image Credit: Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

A visit to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is essential to understanding the area’s history, and it’s well worth a trip inside to take in the grandeur of the apse mosaic and stained-glass windows. Known as the “wedding cake” for its impressively white exterior, the domed church is made from locally sourced travertine that releases calcite when it rains, which essentially bleaches the stone and keeps it looking pristine. Note that while the basilica opens at 6:30 am for visitors, the dome — which offers spectacular panoramic views over Paris — doesn’t open until 10 am.

Visit a museum

Image Credit: Leopoldine Bauer/Travel + Leisure

There’s no shortage of wow-worthy museums dedicated to Montmartre’s history, and each offers a different angle on the storied quartier. Musée de la Vie Romantique is a literary museum that’s housed in a sage-shuttered home and tucked down a cobbled alley full of rose bushes — utterly fitting, given the museum’s greenhouse cafe has been taken over by the fabulous Rose Bakery. Musée de Montmartre is a tribute to the neighbourhood’s artistic legacy: Both Renoir and French painter Suzanne Valadon made their studios there at one point, and the museum’s lush gardens offer magnificent views of the city and Clos Montmartre vineyard. Another worthwhile stop is Dalí Paris, where visitors can marvel at more than 300 works by the surrealist master.

Explore Halle Saint Pierre

Housed in a former covered market, this space is a must-visit for the magnificent architecture alone. Inside, you’ll find a museum, gallery, cafe, and one of the most beautiful bookshops in Paris.

Get your portrait drawn in Place du Tertre

Yes, it’s typically thronged with tourists, but if you’ve never been, the charm of this historic square shouldn’t be missed. While the fringe of restaurants adds to the village-like vibes, they’re overpriced and underwhelming. Instead, come here to admire the dozens of artists who keep the neighbourhood’s creative spirit alive by sketching portraits of visitors (for varying fees and degrees of quality, of course).

Channel your inner Amélie

Montmartre has been the backdrop for many movies through the years, but none so indelibly iconic as 2001’s “Amélie.” Trace the heroine’s journey through some of the film’s most memorable locations, including the Abbesses metro station and along picturesque Rue Lepic, home to Café des Deux Moulins, where she works in the film. All the way up the road, you can spot the Moulin de la Galette, one of the neighbourhood’s few remaining windmills, which attracted the attention of Renoir, Van Gogh, and many other artists who spent time nearby.

Snap some photos at FotoAutomat

Proper photo booth snaps are a playful souvenir to remember your trip, and luckily, there’s a vintage analogue photo booth just in front of the bucolic Abbesses Garden. FotoAutomat has been restoring the last remaining booths around the world since 2007, installing them in neighbourhoods dedicated to supporting the arts. Note that, unlike modern digital photo booths, this will take several minutes to print out your shots — which is why there tends to be a long line. But as with all film photography, the quality and wait are worth it.

Best Restaurants

L’Esquisse

Recommended by the Michelin Guide, the food at this intimate bistro is upscale and inventive without feeling fussy. Vintage Tolix chairs and wooden booths warm the space, which turns around an open kitchen where chef and owner Laëtitia Bret works her magic. A well-curated natural wine list further draws a convivial crowd of locals and in-the-know visitors.

Hardware Société

Montmartre’s most famous brunch spot has earned its reputation for good reason: This cosy Australian cafe sits at the foot of the basilica and churns out comforting yet surprising delights, like duck confit with saffron labne, and scrambled eggs with smoked pastrami on a crunchy baguette. It’s walk-in only, so be prepared to wait on weekends.

Pink Mamma

This oft-Instagrammed Italian joint from the popular Big Mamma Group delivers both decor and decadent dishes. Go for the portrait-lined stairwell that leads to a glass enclosure with views over the city; stay for the twirls of truffled pasta, Neapolitan-style pizza, and pillowy tiramisu.

Bouillon Pigalle

Red banquets, bustling waiters, carafes of house wine on every table: For a classic French feast that will fill you to bursting without breaking the bank, there’s no place like Bouillon Pigalle. Part of a chain of homey brasseries around the city, this two-story location offers views over the bustling avenue below and ladles out generous servings of French specialities like boeuf bourguignon, escargot, and hearty French onion soup. It’s open from noon to midnight every day, making it an excellent spot to stop off for late-night cravings.

L’Arcane

Those looking for a Michelin-starred meal to remember won’t be disappointed by the seasonal tasting menu at this elegant eatery on Rue Lamarck. Here, the classic white tablecloth ambience meets a modern gastronomic journey that’s perfect for a special occasion.

Mokko

Three or four ingredients per dish — that’s all it takes to craft sublime creations like lamb ravioli with black garlic jus and cucumber, creamy mushroom and parmesan polenta, and decadent chocolate mousse at Mokko. The wooden, warmly lit space is as pleasing to look at as the dishes themselves, and the natural wine list isn’t to be missed.

Best Hotels

Hôtel Particulier Montmartre

There’s simply no place more charming to stay in Montmartre than this jewel-sized hotel. Formerly the Hermès family mansion, the three-story home is less than a 10-minute walk from Sacré-Coeur, yet it feels like a world of its own. Tucked away down an out-of-time alley, it’s wreathed in by a lush green garden and a sculpture-studded courtyard. Each of the five unique suites is a design lover’s dream — think mosaic-tiled soaking tubs and art deco murals in one, leopard print walls in another, and a view of the Eiffel Tower from the Prestige Suite on the top floor. A visit to the sultry cocktail bar and delightful French restaurant downstairs is a must even if you can’t nab a room at the hotel.

Maison Souquet

Just across the street from the Moulin Rouge, the marvellously lavish Maison Souquet offers a sensual retreat that pays homage to the hideaway’s former reputation as a discreet brothel for wealthy hedonists. The 20 rooms and suites are appointed with more than 120 different silks, as well as tasselled lamps, stuffed headboards, and fabric-cocooned walls that inspire as much envy and desire as the famous courtesans they’re named after. Couples seeking true privacy and indulgence are in for a treat here — and should be sure to request the key to the celestial swimming pool and hammam.

Hôtel Arvor

Halfway between Palais Garnier and Sacré-Coeur, this 30-room boutique hotel is infused with the genuine artistic spirit of Montmartre — something that feels impossibly rare to come by these days. During the pandemic, Russian-born artist Nina Koltchitskaia took up residency in the hotel, turning it into her own canvas with museum-worthy murals on the walls of each room. Now a haven of creativity, the hotel itself is built around an old-school spiral staircase, and rooms are nicely appointed with cosy bedding and otherwise minimalist decor.

If you can’t make it to the famous Saint-Ouen flea market during your trip, a visit to the exceptionally curated Hôtel Monsieur Aristide will offer a glimpse at what you’re missing. Full of vintage finds — think plush velvet chairs, mirrored vanities, and framed works of art — this 25-room guesthouse channels the bohemian spirit of the neighbourhood. Beyond the upcycled furnishings, the cheery terrazzo floor — crafted from the rubble of the building site during renovation — is another eco-friendly hallmark of this freshly updated space, which has operated as a hotel for more than a century under previous ownership.

Best Shopping

La Butte Fromagère

Just thinking about this tiny artisanal cheese shop makes my mouth water. It boasts a superior selection of aged Comté and Mimolette, creamy Saint-Félicien, and goat cheese for every palate, primarily sourced from small French farms.

La Cave des Abbesses

Part bottle shop, part wine bar, part pâté purveyor, La Cave des Abbesses is a gourmand’s heaven. Open since 1986, this local institution is the perfect place to tuck into a platter of cheese and charcuterie at apéro hour or to grab a bottle for a picnic overlooking the city from the steps of the basilica.

Vintage Stores

Amid Paris’ kilo shops and overwhelming thrift stores, there are a few exceptional places for one-of-a-kind vintage finds. For expertly curated denim, head to Numéro Deux, an appointment-only showroom dedicated to vintage Levi’s, with a focus on 501s. At Chinemachine on Rue des Martyrs, prepare to sift through racks and descend the spiral staircase into the basement for designer picks and ‘60s party dresses — they’re well-priced and worth the search. A bit farther afield is one of my favourite boutiques in the city, Vintage Inspiration Paris. The store’s quirky owner will gleefully help you try on YSL blazers and Hermès handbags; the selection isn’t cheap, but it’s divine.

Rock Bottles

Natural wine lovers shouldn’t miss this epic cellar, which several French sommeliers have recommended to me as their personal favourite in Paris. The wine shop is small but mighty, with a selection of spectacular organic and biodynamic producers, both well-established and little-known.

Best Nightlife

Moulin Rouge

montmartre

This legendary cabaret was once the pinnacle of Parisian nightlife, and while ticket prices are steep for the “Féerie” show, how many times do you get to see a proper French cancan in your life? The spectacular is a mesmerising tribute to Paris’ past, and well worth the price of admission.

The Best Times To Visit Portugal, According To A Localhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/europe/the-best-times-to-visit-portugal/2023-11-22T07:00:20+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=42510best times to visit Portugal

In 2023, Portugal set a new tourism record when more than 1.8 million people visited in May. And, as Reuters reported, more than 6.4 million travellers paid the Iberian nation a visit in the first five months of 2023, up from 5.7 million during the same time period in 2019, prior to the pandemic. So, what makes this place special enough to attract that many people? Well, just about everything.

“Portugal is one of the smallest countries with the largest plethora of touristic activities on offer,” Nick Roucos, managing director of Bomporto Hotels, which owns The Vintage Lisbon and The Lumiares, shared with Travel + Leisure. “In such a small territory, you can, in a very short framework of time and space, immerse yourself in the culture of city life, enjoy natural wonders from beaches to rivers to gardens, taste its rich yet diversified gastronomy across every region, or just lay back and relax in the most peaceful surroundings.”

As a resident of Portugal, I can attest to its bounty of activities, history, and delicious food (don’t miss the pastéis de nata, bacalhau, or garlic shrimp). I can also promise it’s a place worthy of exploration throughout the year. And experts like Teresa Barros, founder and CEO of Xpose Consulting, couldn’t agree more.

The best times to visit Portugal

“Portugal is a magical country. Imagine a place where the ‘old world’ meets the ‘new world’ — Portugal has the best of both. Here, you still have the slow living of the ‘old world’ mixed with the creativity and energy of a country that has recently been ‘discovered,’” said Barros. As for when she thinks it’s best to visit, it’s all about the renewal period.

“Portugal is known for its year-round good weather. Having said this, I suggest visiting in the spring (April to June) when nature is awakening and brings incredible light and energy,” she shared. “As an alternative, I suggest visiting in the fall (September or October), when the weather is still great and places are generally more chill than in August (when everything tends to be fuller). It’s also a great way to extend summer.”

Portugal experiences four distinct seasons, but it never gets too cold to venture out. Still, the weather can swing wildly from summer to winter, as can the crowds and prices for hotels, excursions, and more. Portugal’s tourism seasons fall into three categories:

 • High Season: June through August
 • Shoulder Season: September to November; April to June
 • Low Season: December to April

Best times to visit Portugal for smaller crowds

The best time to visit Portugal for smaller crowds is during the colder months from December through April. This is when you’ll find far fewer tourists crowding the streets. That said, the weather will indeed be colder up and down the coast, making it a less-than-ideal time to hit the beach. However, it’s an exceptionally good period to explore places like Lisbon and Porto, the country’s two largest cities. In both, you’ll find plenty of historic attractions, like Praça do Comércio and Belém Tower in Lisbon, as well as the World of Wine in Porto, which will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about Portuguese wine. And really, there’s no better time to try one of the nation’s famed red wines than on a chilly winter day.

Best times to visit Portugal for good weather

Image Credit: Paula Galindo Valle/Travel + Leisure

For warm, long days, pay Portugal a visit over the summer months. As Weather Spark explained, the warm season in Portugal typically lasts from mid-June to mid-September, when the average daily high hits above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.55 degrees Celsius). The hottest month is August, with an average high of 83 degrees (28.33 degrees Celsius). The only thing to note during this time is that the winds tend to pick up, which is why most people who frequent the beaches in Portugal own screen guards to keep the sand from whipping up around them and getting into their swimsuits while sunbathing.

Best times to visit Portugal for lower prices

The best time to visit Portugal for lower prices is in both its shoulder and low seasons. While we’ve discussed the low season above, it’s key to point out that Portugal’s shoulder seasons in the spring and fall can be fantastic, too. You’ll typically find thinner crowds in highly touristed areas like Lisbon, Faro, and Porto, but the weather will still usually be sublime. It’s also a great time to find deals on hotels and excursions, plus visiting during this period gives you a much better shot at snagging coveted reservations at the country’s hottest restaurants. If you don’t mind cooler temperatures and are a fan of beautiful wildflower blooms and bright green pastures, make your way to Portugal in its spring-shoulder season. For still-warm (and even potentially hot) days, try the fall shoulder season instead.

Best times to visit Portugal for festivals

Portugal is a nation that loves its festivals. A personal favourite is Festas de Santo António, which is celebrated in Lisbon and beyond and honours the city’s patron saint, Santo António. The main celebrations happen from June 11 to 13, when people take to the streets to enjoy sardines and watch the fabulous parades. (Seriously, the parties happen in every corner of the city, and people spill out onto the streets all night long, so don’t expect to get a good night’s sleep over these few days).

Other major festivals in Portugal include Carnival, which occurs in February and March; Holy Week in April and May; and Sintra Festival over the summer.

It’s also worth visiting during the festive season, as the nation takes its Christmas joy seriously. Travelers can find twinkly lights and nativity scenes just about everywhere, along with a number of Christmas markets in places like Lisbon and Porto.

Worst times to visit Portugal

There’s no bad time to visit Portugal, as every season offers its own rewards. However, if you want to avoid the destination’s rainy season, avoid coming in October and November. This is when you’ll be hard-pressed to find a fully clear day, plus temperatures may be a bit cooler and the days get a lot shorter. That said, you can always find something to fill your time here, so really, the best time to visit Portugal is whenever you wish.

This May Be The Most Photogenic City In Europe — With Scenic Canals & Twinkling Christmas Marketshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/europe/bruges-may-be-the-most-photogenic-city-in-europe/2023-11-17T02:00:31+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=41785Bruges

Amsterdam may be known for its picturesque canals, but it’s far from the only European destination with such appeal. Located in northwest Belgium, Bruges enchants travellers with its scenic waterways, cobblestone streets, and medieval architecture.

Compact and chock-full of photogenic landmarks — notably the Belfry of Bruges and 14th-century Stadhuis (City Hall) — the capital of West Flanders is prime for walking tours and aimless wandering. It’s also a joy for cycling. From the hidden passages with secrets ready to be discovered to the bustling squares, the city exudes a storybook atmosphere. The sweet smell of waffles and chocolate wafts out of confection shops. Cosy bars and quayside breweries pour Belgian beer for tourists and locals. Restaurants give visitors a taste of local cuisine with menus that spotlight cheese croquettes and beef stew.

Many travellers opt to visit Bruges as a quick day trip from Brussels (the direct train runs frequently and takes less than an hour). However, it’s certainly worth staying the night to experience the full scope of its charm, from the early morning light that shines over the rooftops to the ambience when the sun goes down.

We talked to local tour guides to discover the best places to see, eat, drink, and stay in Bruges.

Best things to do

Canal boat ride

Image Credit: Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

A tour along the historic canal is a must when in Bruges. “It’s a wonderful way to discover the city from another viewpoint,” says Rik Callens, a ToursByLocals guide in Bruges. “While cruising along the scenic waterways, visitors will see beautiful architecture and many charming surprises only visible from the water.” Boats depart at regular intervals throughout the day and into the early evening.

Belfry of Bruges

Built in the 13th century, the towering medieval Belfry of Bruges in Markt is a symbol of the city and is not to be missed. “Visitors can climb the 366 steps to the top for incredible views,” explains Albert Casasín, a ToursByLocals guide in Bruges.

Burg Square

Located in the centre of Bruges, Burg Square houses some of the most monumental and magnificent landmark buildings in the city, including the 14th-century City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Afterwards, stop by one of the many nearby artisan chocolate shops for decadent, handcrafted truffles and bonbons.

Groeningemuseum

After familiarising yourself with the key landmarks, Natalie Tall, a ToursByLocals guide in Bruges, suggests visiting the Groeningemuseum. “It’s quite exquisite with an impressive collection of art by Flemish and Belgian masters that span the course of centuries. Definitely do the audio tour to gain a deeper understanding.”

Lake of Love

The Lake of Love, which sits next to Minnewaterpark in the southern part of the city, is an alluring and relaxing place that’s steeped in natural beauty. In the winter, visitors spin around the ice rink, which is illuminated by twinkling lights. Summer, meanwhile, means picnics and concerts.

Best Restaurants

Bruges

De Stove

One of Casasín’s absolute favourite restaurants in Bruges, De Stove is small, cosy, and situated in the heart of the city. “It’s a place that transmits charm and authenticity with incredible food and a warm atmosphere,” he says.

Bruut

“Dining at Bruut is always such a treat,” says Tall. “It’s an elevated dining experience that comprises 10 courses prepared by a talented chef, personal service, and impeccable wine pairings.”

One Restaurant

One Restaurant serves delicious local dishes, plus cocktails, wine, and a good selection of Belgian beers, in a wonderfully gorgeous setting with an intimate dining room and a foliage-framed patio.

De Twijfelaar

Casasín recommends De Twijfelaar because of its creative dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The colourful, art-filled dining room matches the spirit of the menu. Plus, there’s a lovely terrace for dining in the summer.

House of Waffles Brugge

Have a hankering for something sweet? You’ve come to the right place. The Flemish capital is very much a dessert mecca. House of Waffles Brugge satisfies cravings with freshly made golden waffles topped with drizzled chocolate and strawberries.

Best time to visit

Image Credit: Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Bruges supplies numerous reasons to visit in every season. Spring brings daffodils. The weather is pleasant in the summer. Want to avoid the crowds? Consider shoulder season in the fall. If you’re keen to get swept up in the yuletide spirit, it’s worth planning a trip in December to experience the famous holiday markets and light displays that turn the city into a real-life Hallmark card.

How to get there

Bruges is quite accessible, with direct trains leaving from Brussels regularly. The journey only takes about 55 minutes and costs less than USD 20 (HKD 156).

How to get around

Bruges
Image Credit: Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

It’s easy to navigate Bruges on foot. Free historic walking tours are available if you’re looking to pack in all the key attractions and gain some valuable insights along the way. That’s certainly not to put anyone off aimless wandering. Boat rides along the canal offer a unique perspective. Cycling and carriage rides round out the list of transport methods.
