In many ways, South Africa is a country of abundance. Nicknamed the “Rainbow Nation” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu after its first democratic election in 1994, South Africa is overflowing with iconic wildlife, truly epic environments and vistas, and world-renowned hotels and restaurants. Pre-pandemic, the country of warm, friendly people drew more than 10 million annual visitors; it’s now rebounding steadily, with four million people arriving in the first half of 2023.

“South Africa is an especially compelling nation, with many cultures, languages, and traditions to explore and enjoy,” says Cape Town local Simon Mandy, managing director of The Royal Portfolio, a South African family–owned collection of luxurious properties that include The Silo Hotel in Cape Town and Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park. “This is reflected in our cuisine, which draws on a wealth of fresh, seasonal, local ingredients and multiple influences to create unique flavour sensations.”

What’s more, it’s a well-known fact that those spending US dollars get amazing value for their money — all in a country where English is spoken and there are flawless beaches, endless savannas, and impressive mountains. Having visited South Africa’s coastline, wine country, Garden Route, and wildlife preserves over the years in January, February, October and December, I have experienced a variety of weather conditions, from extreme wind to fog to baking heat. Oftentimes, it feels like multiple seasons in one day, especially in Cape Town, so I always pack a lot of adaptable layers.

Roar Africa founder and CEO Deborah Calmeyer, a safari expert and part-time Cape Town resident, loves being there most in March, when “there are no crowds and perfect warm weather to enjoy all the beauty of Table Mountain and the emerald Winelands without the December rush of people.”

For her, the reasons to visit South Africa are as numerous as its healthy populations of zebras, lions, rhinos, and elephants: “the level of service; the restaurants, in both the cities and the bush; and the diversity of experience — the cosmopolitan culture of Cape Town, the beauty of the Winelands, the ochre dunes of the Kalahari Desert, and the abundance of pristine bush, teeming with wildlife.”

These are the best times to visit South Africa

  • High Season: December through February
  • Shoulder Season: September to November; March to May
  • Low Season: June to August

If you don’t like crowds, avoid Cape Town during its busy holiday surge in December and January, says Calmeyer, who adds that the most thronged months for safari tend to be December and June through August. The rest of the year, adventurers are typically blessed with more intimate experiences for viewing wildlife plus fewer vehicles around exciting sightings. “There is so much beauty throughout the other months of the year and, provided you have the right gear, you’ll have a spectacular experience in this country of contrasts,” Calmeyer adds. According to Mandy, the quietest times to travel in South Africa are October, November, April, and May — the country as a whole receives fewer visitors during these months.

Best time to visit for lower prices

In Cape Town, travellers will typically find May through August “the lightest on the pocket,” says Mandy, adding that the best pricing on a full South Africa itinerary — one that includes a safari — can be found in the shoulder season of April and May, their autumn. September, which tends to be somewhat quiet, can also be more accessible price-wise, according to Calmeyer. Conversely, December is when prices hit their peak, and oftentimes hotels and lodges enforce minimum stay periods.

“South Africa has a very pleasant and favourable climate year-round,” says Mandy, who notes that spring and autumn offer the most balanced weather in the majority of the country. Mandy’s personal favourite season is spring, from September to November. “It offers beautiful displays of blooming gardens and wildflowers on safari,” he says. “The weather is perfect — neither too hot nor too cold.”

Between October and May — essentially the shoulder seasons and summertime (a.k.a. high season) — Calmeyer says the weather on the Western Cape is her favourite. The same goes for safari destinations across the country. “The weather is brilliant,” she says. These are also the best months for hiking, in her opinion, as there’s little rainfall (contrary to Johannesburg, where most of the rain occurs in the summer). One disclaimer: Because South Africa is so large, with lots of geographical diversity, there are plenty of climate quirks as you traverse different regions.

In Calmeyer’s expert opinion, “anytime” can be the right time to take a wildlife safari — if you use the right local travel advisor with an intimate knowledge of the country’s parks and regions, which range from the Kalahari in the Northern Cape to the most famous Kruger National Park. “There are epic opportunities for wildlife viewing 12 months a year,” she says.

Typically, the drier months (June to September) are considered excellent times because “animals gather around water sources in the absence of rain,” says Mandy, meaning they can be easier to spot. The vegetation also typically dies back during these months, making smaller creatures more visible. He adds, “If you’re an avid bird-watcher, the warmer months (November to February) see the arrival of migratory birds and a dramatic increase in the volume of the dawn chorus.” That time of year is referred to as the green season, when the weather tends to be rainy and warm in wildlife reserves and parks.

Best time to visit for a beach holiday

There’s no question that summer in South Africa (December to February) is the best time to sunbathe on one of the many spectacular beaches that wrap its long, 1,770-mile (2848.5 km) coastline. Still, don’t expect leisurely swims in the sea. “Don’t forget that it is the Atlantic Ocean, so you are unlikely to get in, as it’s cold,” says Calmeyer. “However, for those who enjoy colder water, Cape Town is fabulous in December and January, with white-sand beaches, abundant water activities, and incredible snorkelling and diving opportunities in the Great African Seaforest” — the giant bamboo kelp forest seen in the documentary “My Octopus Teacher.” For wetsuit-clad surfers, summer tends to equal smaller waves — plus wind — while the peak surf season is March to September, when the water is at its most frigid. Regardless of the season, Mandy adds, “Be warned: The African sun is harsh, so don’t forget your sunscreen.”

Best time to visit for festivals

Between lively farmers markets in Cape Town and concert series in the Cape Winelands, the pervasive energy in South Africa is festive. The Cape Town Art Fair and Cape Town International Jazz Festival, which both occur each February, are great draws. And I can personally attest that the Summer Sunset Concerts that take place from November through April at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden are captivating affairs worthy of a bountiful BYO picnic. Mandy adds, “The popular concerts offer live music in a picturesque setting beneath Table Mountain.” Harvest season in the Winelands — Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl — spans February and March, and is an exciting and beautiful time to visit both storied iconic estates and up-and-coming young winemakers.

Worst time to visit South Africa

South Africa is one of those places that holds its appeal all year long. However, Mandy warns that some travellers could find the peak of summer a bit too hot — though it typically stays in the 20s and only rarely reaches the 30s — and winter temps in remote mountainous regions in the Northern Cape too cold.

Comprising three main game reserves — Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP), The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and Khutse Game Reserve — Kalahari Desert covers a vast part of southern Africa. Despite massive rainfall, it is often called the ‘thirstland’ due to rapid evaporation. Kalahari offers an interesting combination of flora and fauna, including meerkats, gemsbok (antelope family), and edible plants such as Hoodia cactus and tsamma melons. You can also spot reptiles like Cape cobras, puff adders and rock monitors in this enormous stretch of sand.

The Great Migration
Image crdit: Olha Solodenko/ Shutterstock

Formally established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, Serengeti National Park owes its popularity to the Great Migration, involving the movement of two million wildebeest (antelope family). This spectacular journey, beginning with the birth of nearly half a million calves between January and March, sees the herds migrate to Masai Mara in May, only to return by December. Facing challenges like crocodiles in the rivers and lions in the plains, this migration is a unique natural phenomenon that captivates wildlife enthusiasts.

Live on a treehouse, savour spicy barbecued meat, and attend the Sauti za Busara Music Festival (February 9 to 11, 2024) in Tanzania. In addition to housing flavour and fervour, the country is renowned for its lush landscape and wildlife. Next, stop at the Ngorongoro Crater — the largest intact, unfilled, and inactive volcano in the world. Home to over 25,000 animals, it is one of the easiest destinations to spot the Big 5, including the African elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros. Additionally, thrill chasers can set camp at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), the tallest dormant volcano in the world.

Club the jungle escapades with some sun, sand and shore by taking a ferry to Zanzibar. This archipelago houses some of the best beaches in the country, including Nungwi Beach, Paje Beach, and Jambiani Beach, to name a few. Zanzibar also delights with Freddie Mercury’s house and marine adventures like snorkelling and scuba diving.

Seychelles (East Africa)

A tropical haven, and also a sought-after honeymoon destination in Africa, Seychelles is all about white powder beaches, luxurious resorts, and delectable local cuisine. Visit the capital city of Mahe for postcard-perfect beaches and granite cliffs. Mahe’s Beau Vallon Beach hosts an open-air food and crafts market on Wednesdays, bringing together tourists and locals on its crescent shore.

To witness the old-world charm of Seychelles, head to La Digue — a 10 sq km island that tourists can easily navigate on their feet, or better yet, cycle through! We recommend renting a cycle and pedalling to L’Union Estate, a reserve of takamaka and coconut trees, which is also home to giant Seychelles turtles, an ancient cemetery, souvenir shops and the Old Pier Cafe. Or, visit the popular Anse Source D’Argent Beach — scenes from the movie Cast Away (2000) were shot here. Lastly, partake in thrill-inducing water sports like diving, snorkelling, and kayaking at St Anne Marine National Park.

The Moroccan landscape promises blissful explorations in the pleasant winter weather. Start your journey in Fes, the country’s cultural capital. Explore the medina of Fes (Fes el Bali), the largest and oldest medina in North Africa, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We also recommend visiting the world-famous tanneries of Fes and the madrasas, meandering through the souks, catching a roof-top sunset, and investing in a traditional Fes carpet. Thereafter, embark on a desert tour from Fes to the popular city of Marrakech, passing through the Sahara Desert. Be sure to visit the Bahia Palace in Marrakech, brush through the pages of history at La Maison de la Photographie, and saunter under the winter sun at the Majorelle Garden. Adventure seekers can hike the High Atlas Mountains in the Ait Bougmez Valley.

Begin your Mauritius holiday in the Le Morne village — a cultural and historic site flanked by the ocean and mountains. The coveted Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, extends into the Indian Ocean in southwest Mauritius. You can hike to the summit of this mountain and admire the breathtaking views — the round trip takes approximately 4 hours.

Elevate your getaway by hitting Le Morne Beach, a tropical paradise fringed by palm trees and white sand. Just 13 km from the beach lies the village of Chamarel. Here, delight in the highest waterfall of Mauritius (Chamarel Waterfall), the Ebony Forest Reserve, and most importantly, visit Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth — a region of volcanic earth dunes that boast rainbow-coloured hues.

Adventure seekers can partake in kite surfing (and newbies can sign up for private lessons) on the Le Morne and La Prairie beaches. Additionally, you can go snorkelling or scuba diving with renowned dive centres like ScubaCaribe – Diving and Water Sports and Mauritius Dive Adventures. Another option is to soar in the sky on a seaplane flight, which departs from La Prairie Beach and skirts over the entire South West Region. You’ll fly over the Le Morne Brabant, the Black River Gorges National Park, and the iconic lagoon with its underwater waterfall. For bustling beaches and nightlife, we recommend Grand Baie, located in the Rivière du Rempart District.

A treat awaits wildlife lovers in Botswana. The Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve promise jungle safaris, luxury lodges, and otherworldly sights of African elephants (among other fauna). The next port of call is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve — 12.4 million hectares of wilderness that houses black-maned lions, oryx antelope, and ground squirrels. Next, visit the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring rock paintings, shelters, and caves.

Some of the drawings on the rocks date back 30,000 years, and archaeologists believe that humans have inhabited the region for as long as 100,000 years. We also recommend visiting the Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan National Parks. The region presents a lush lakebed and migrating wildlife between November to April. November and December are also the perfect months to witness the longest zebra migration (620 miles) in the world, from Namibia to Nxai Pan.

São Tomé and Príncipe (Central Africa)

Visit the lesser-known islands of São Tomé and Príncipe for a rare and exotic trip. Touted to be the African Galapagos, the region offers beaches, jungles, and epicurean wonders. The islands are home to more endemic species per square foot than the Galapagos islands. Trek through the forests of Obô Natural Park, where 700 plant species and 143 different types of birds will greet you. Or witness the sheer remoteness of Príncipe from a propeller plane that departs from São Tomé. Thereafter, explore the pristine white sands, massive boulders, and crystal clear waters at beaches like Praia Banana, Praia Boi, and Praia Bateria.

The region is also a crucial breeding (and feeding) area for five out of the seven species of sea turtles. The turtles reach the coastline of São Tomé around November and lay eggs until February. In the following weeks, travellers can catch a glimpse of the hatchlings’ maiden meeting with the ocean.

We’d spent more than an hour tracking the cheetah’s satellite signal, and when we finally caught up to the animal, she was wandering slowly through the tall, sun-bleached grass. Her belly swollen from devouring a kill, she flopped down in a patch of shade, seemingly relaxed in our presence. It was an encounter that isn’t likely to happen again, said Musa Mbatha, who was guiding me through this stretch of prairie. Two male lions had recently been reintroduced to the area and would soon be competing with the resident cheetahs for prey.

The sighting, which I shared with Mbatha and two wildlife monitors, Bongani Khumalo and Tumelo Sathekge, represented a glimpse of the positive change taking place in KwaZulu-Natal, a South African province often known by its initials, KZN. I’d flown from Cape Town to the Babanango Game Reserve, in the lush hills of Zululand, to get a closer look at how local communities, global investors, and wildlife-tourism pros are collaborating to improve the ecology of this corner of the country.

This safari in South Africa should be on your travel itinerary

The Emcakwini Community Trust, which manages 47,000 acres of land in KZN, came together with two other landholding community groups to create Babanango in 2017, along with German philanthropists Hellmuth and Barbara Weisser, who support the project with land and funds. The collective began reintroducing once-endemic animals in 2018, as well as remediating landscapes that had been given over to cattle pasture. Today, black rhinos, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs are beginning to thrive; shortly after my visit this May, elephants were brought back, too.

“This is one of the largest rewilding programs in South Africa in the last 20 years,” says Andy Baxter, Babanango’s chief operating officer.

The reserve is also becoming a destination for in-the-know safari-goers looking for their next thrill. “This is definitely not a first-time-in-Africa experience,” Baxter concedes. “It’s not always easy to see the animals—but that’s not our unique selling point.” Instead, guests get to see the early stages of the area’s conservation journey, joining the tracking team to monitor reintroduced wildlife, observing how the animals adapt to their new home, and meeting with researchers, whether out in the field or over coffee.

[inline_related_article article_id="38532,25226"]

And while Babanango may not yet offer the abundant wildlife found in, say, Kruger National Park, there’s more to this place than just animals. Visitors can see millennia-old rock art created by the San people, while Iron Age kilns are regularly discovered all over the reserve. Guests can also explore more recent history, with day trips to battlefields of the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War.

New accommodations will be another draw to the area, which already has two comfortable mid-range properties, Babanango Valley Lodge and Babanango Zulu Rock Lodge. The more luxurious Babanango Madwaleni River Lodge just opened on the banks of the White Umfolozi River, with 12 tented suites, each of which has a private plunge pool and a deck overlooking the river.

There’s also welcome development along the coast of the Indian Ocean, which merits a night or two before or after a visit to Babanango. The most noteworthy addition is the seaside hotel Sala Beach House, which opened last year. I awoke there one morning to the sound of waves and yoga on the deck and wrapped the day with a barbecue of crab, lobster, squid, and swordfish.

As blissful as I found the coast, it’s the memory of a night at Babanango Valley Lodge that has stuck with me. The staff had arranged a mobile gin-and-tonic bar overlooking the rolling hills. The blazing sun was dipping below the horizon, but it was still too early in the evening to hear those two lions calling. I knew they were out there, somewhere. Balance was slowly being restored — and I couldn’t wait to see what tomorrow might bring.

This South African Town Is Perfect for a Day-Drinking Day Triphttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/200-km-away-stellenbosch-cape-winelands-south-africa/2023-10-18T15:53:30+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=38532Stellenbosch

Raise your glasses to Stellenbosch, an adorable 350-year-old town in the Cape Winelands — the birthplace of winemaking in South Africa that’s just 50 kilometers from Cape Town.

200km Away

IF YOU’RE THINKING OF visiting ‘wine country’ in a great wine country, I have two words for you: South Africa. My family and I recently took an Adventures By Disney vacation that included awe-inspiring days on safari, but also gifted us with great opportunities to see other parts of the country and, importantly, drink well! Stellenbosch, located just 50 kilometers outside of Cape Town, is the capital of what’s known as the Cape Winelands, with some of the best vineyards South Africa has to offer. Yet visiting Stellenbosch offers so much more than wonderful wineries; there are also interesting museums, fabulous art galleries, and a variety of delightful coffee shops.

Getting to Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa dating back to 1679, was an easy hour’s drive despite the rain and gray sky. From the moment we arrived I knew this was a place where you could spend an entire day and still have more to see. Unfortunately, the morning greeted us with a cold rainstorm that was not ideal for walking around. We quickly decided that we were not dressed appropriately for the weather–providing a lovely excuse to shop. We wandered into a number of stores where we found stylish, made-in-South-Africa clothing that was also functional.

As we wandered through the town, we encountered beautiful works of art on display inside and outside of galleries. It felt like we were in an immersive museum experience. Part of the charm of Stellenbosch is rooted in the wonderful displays of history and art depicting and rooted in everyday life. A highlight was seeing a display of Nelson Mandela’s tennis shoes that he wore when he walked out of prison. But this was not in a museum – rather in a store selling that brand of shoe. One of the government buildings has an exquisite map sculpture in its courtyard depicting Mandela’s face.

The chill and dampness of the air was also a wonderful excuse to try one of the many coffee shops available in town. We treated ourselves to steaming hot teas and lattes. Our barista eagerly gave us an elaborate demonstration of his artistic expertise. We excitedly sampled a hot rooibos tea latte. Rooibos tea is such a staple in South Africa that if you ask for simply tea, rooibos is what you’re likely to get. I found it absolutely delicious.

After a few wholesome cuppas, we realized that it’s always five o’clock somewhere and it was time to really take advantage of being in the Cape Winelands. This region of rolling vineyards was the birthplace of the South African winemaking industry, and has some of the oldest wineries in the country, including our destination, Spier Wine Farm. We eagerly walked up the gravel road to the main entrance of the Spier Estate, and, climbing the steps to the manor, we knew we were going to be treated to an elegant experience. The ambience provided a beautiful aesthetic and picturesque backdrop. We began with a lavish buffet lunch featuring several South African dishes. The wine tasting included six wines at each place setting: three red and three white. South Africa is known for its own blend of wine, the Pinotage, and this turned out to be a clear fan favorite. We left Spier with cheerful smiles as we headed back to Cape Town from Stellenbosch.

It felt like we had spent the day deep in the countryside when in actuality we were right outside of Cape Town. For a few hours we were whisked away to a part of South Africa that is a perfect complement to both the stunning city of Cape Town and the serenity of the bush on safari. And my whole family cheers to that.

How This Family Found Heart and Home on Safarihttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/journeys-south-africa-safari-adventures-by-disney/2023-09-25T16:06:37+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=36062South Africa Safari

Sure, it’s a bucketlist vacation, but a safari in South Africa will send you home with much more than an overstuffed scrapbook of great photos. Our writer herded up her entire family for an Adventures by Disney journey that included perspective-changing game drives in search of the Big Five.

#journeys

PLANNING A FAMILY VACATION can be difficult at the best of times, but now that I am the mother of three young adults, the challenge of finding a time that fits everyone’s hectic schedules is compounded by finding a vacation appealing enough for my “children” to prioritize family time over their competing interests. It is complicated and frustrating at best, a comparable situation might be herding cats—actually, in this case, let’s say lions.

I knew that an epic trip would be the enticement needed to get my entire family on board. We love animals and adventure, so I wanted to incorporate activities celebrating nature, but that still left many wonderful destinations. As a Black woman growing up in America, Africa has held a compelling allure. I have always wanted to go to Africa. So that narrowed the focus to an entire continent, but when the Adventures by Disney South Africa trip — including a safari — became available, I knew this was the trip of my dreams. This would be a special experience for us because none of us had ever traveled to any part of Africa. We were embarking upon a journey to bond and make memories. This trip offered something to meet all the our interests of my family of mostly animal fans. The only surprise was how impactful a little mouse would be to clearing everyone’s schedules, but Mickey worked his magic and we were headed to the bush.

[gallery ids="137504,137503"]

From the moment we stepped foot in Cape Town and traveled to Kapama Private Game Reserve, I did not have to plan a single activity or lift any luggage. Our Adventure Guides, Jameel and Craig, served as our 24-hour concierges, including arranging for the “Tinkerbellmen” to have our bags waiting for us in our rooms upon our arrival. They organized everything, our meals which included a traditional braai (a South African barbecue) and afternoon teas before safari. With the necessities of life taken care of, we only had to focus on enjoying our vacation and family time. The trip offers a packed schedule, but we decided how active we wanted to be each day. My family left no stone unturned, if it was available, someone tried it, and we became fully immersed in the safari experience. From the moment we embarked on our first game drive we were ready to explore the bush in open air all-terrain vehicles.

Observing animals in their natural habitat was obviously one of my favorite things about safari. A close second, however, was the unexpected surprise of peace and serenity that we experienced as we watched the glorious sunrises across the horizon. Game drives begin early, so whether those quiet moments were engendered simply by awe or a mixture of awe and exhaustion is still a bit unclear to me, but regardless it was beautiful. I discovered that South Africa has some of the best sunrises and sunsets. My family is normally a chatty bunch but being outdoors we were in sync with nature, and the quiet that surrounded us was calming. I think our senses were heightened because we were so focused on the natural beauty and trying to find the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinos. One thing I learned early on during the safari is that we were not in control. The animals have their own rhythm and routines, so we had to be vigilant and humble as we tried to glimpse them in their world.

[gallery ids="137507,137516"]

The only “hunting” we did was for the perfect photo of our favorite animals. You quickly learn to keep your cameras out because you never know what you are going to encounter. Having your camera at the ready to capture the perfect photo opportunity is part of the sport, but just enjoying the moment and making memories worked too. I knew that the animals were not going to pose for photos, but I was surprised by the number of animal backsides I encountered—it was a lot. A sense of humor and patience goes a long way on safari especially when you are focused, as I was on sharing my experience with others via my “perfect” photos. But that’s part of the fun, and thankfully, no two game drives were identical so the variety and the unexpected were our constant companions, too.

With all of that “hard work” trying to take the perfect photo, avoid branches, and stay in the all-terrain vehicle, we also happily had opportunities for breaks. I lived for sundowners, basically safari happy-hour cocktails in the middle of the bush. We basked in the setting sun and shared highlights from the game drives—whether it was watching a lion watch us as it strolled past our vehicle, baby elephants snuggling alongside their moms, zebras drinking from the watering hole or hippos swimming midday—all while sipping Savanna Ciders. This ability to decompress and share our impressions and favorite moments was quiet luxury at its best.

Spotting Leopard, Adventures By Disney

I was grateful to have seen so many magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. I am an educator from Pennsylvania who suddenly turned into an adventurer and wildlife photographer as the air whipped through my hair and I ducked branches searching for leopards during a night time game drive. The thrill of searching for and occasionally finding so many elusive animals who were often camouflaged by trees or meandering towards a watering hole was surreal. I remember being surprised several times as our vehicle approached a bend and a regal giraffe would be standing nonchalantly chewing on a tree branch. Each time I was left astounded wondering how I did not see the world’s tallest animal looming about until it was right in front of me. I am in awe of nature. Experiencing nature in such an authentic and vulnerable way was humbling. I felt so small in such a big world but at the same time I felt my unique place in the world.

Frazier Family Adventure, Adventures By Disney

I almost teared up when one of our guides said, “Welcome home!” I felt it so profoundly. Perhaps he was referring to the luxurious lodging proudly on display in the middle of the wilderness but to me it meant more than that. By this point, it was no longer an adventure about animals; it was a journey home for me. No, I have no knowledge of a familial connection to South Africa but I felt embraced by the people and the culture. I can see why people go back to South Africa over and over and why it is affectionately known as “Mother City.”cktk The country offered a vacation that I did not know I needed. And I think the same was true for my family, as well. It is not often that the five of us can travel and everyone is happy. We all agreed that our favorite moments of the trip happened on safari, but we each have a list of our other top five experiences—such as wine tasting, nature hikes, art galleries, animal sanctuaries and golf. South Africa offered something to feed each of our individual souls. We felt at home.

Adventures by Disney South Africa vacations from US$11,099 per person for 10 days.

VIDEO: What’s It’s Really Like in a 4WD on Safarihttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/africa/journeys-dr-holly-south-africa-safari-video/2023-09-25T13:05:00+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=36731Safari

It’s not just that safaris are generally super expensive, but also that, for most of us, they’re also hard to get to. But as anyone who’s taken one will tell you, that journey is not just part of the adventure but also the romance. Find out why here.

#journeys

HERE WE ARE, off to embark on another adventure with one of our bubbliest contributors, Dr. Holly Hatcher-Frazier. This time: a safari in South Africa for which she herded up her husband and three adult kids. On this trip of a lifetime, they learned not just about wildlife, conservation and the big five, but also themselves.

As Black Americans who had never been to the continent of Africa, they found a previously untapped emotional connection and sense of place. As a normally loquacious bunch, they found comfort in silence, sitting alone together in the bush, eyes peeled, all senses on alert for wildlife sightings. As people constantly on the go… well, actually that part translated pretty well to the first part of this trip, at least, because it was a multi-legged multi-transport expedition to get from their various home cities in the States to a remote South Africa safari, via  planes, cars, buses, four-wheel-drive and more.

Watch Holly’s account of her safari here and try not to be envious of all the animals they spotted:

Opinion: Why Responsible Travel Mattershttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/opinion-why-responsible-travel-matters/2023-08-26T13:21:30+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=32330Jacada Travel

What does “regenerative” mean when talking travel? It’s about making positive, pro-social impact on the places you visit. We asked one of the leaders in this field, the founder of Jacada Travel, to tell us how we can be more responsible globetrotters even on luxury vacations.

The Green Edit

TOURISM IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S fastest growing and largest industries. At its best, it’s a tool that can break down barriers between communities; facilitate an exchange of ideas and perspectives; preserve and protect culture, history, and heritage; and even finance nature-based solutions to some of the world’s most complex societal challenges. But it can also put a strain on natural resources, erode biodiversity, increase pollution, and commodify culture.

From the very beginning at Jacada, it was always clear to us that travel must be done in a way that respects local communities and preserves the intrinsic value of ecosystems. We love the old adage, “take only photos, leave only footsteps,” but what we’ve seen in the last 15 years is that we can actually take this further and leave the world better than we found it.

The impact of a single trip has the ability to create a considerable ripple effect. It can create meaningful work, but it can also fund initiatives and projects in areas where government assistance is insufficient or has failed. In our efforts to promote positive impact over the years, we’re proud to say that we’ve partnered with a wide range of hotels, lodges, and camps who have undertaken major efforts to support social and environmental causes.

For example, the folks behind Sol y Luna, a beautiful hotel circled by the Andes Mountain range in Peru are tackling the lack of access to education in the Sacred Valley through income generated by their hotel. Or Wilderness Safaris, who operate a range of luxurious eco-camps across Africa and who, at the time of writing, conserve just over 2.3 million hectares of land, with the plan to double this by 2030.

Jacada Travel guests are able to get under the skin of a destination to meet the movers and the shakers of the country — the artists, artisans, historians, and guides who play a powerful role in preserving culture, tradition, and heritage. Working within some of the world’s most biodiverse destinations, conservation fees for national parks create financial value for their protection, and access to these areas presents opportunities for citizen science, education, and knowledge sharing.
